Imo State was created on February 3, 1976, following the division of the former East Central State by the military administration of Murtala Muhammed. It is named after the Imo River, which flows through the state and other southeastern Nigerian states. The state was formed during a period of state creation in Nigeria, aimed at restructuring the country’s administration. Prior to its creation, Imo State was part of the East Central State. Just like many of the Nigerian states, Imo took its name from the popular river, Imo Mmiri. PURPOSE OF THE GROUP: Are you from this State?
